Mac hardware repair

Some of the issues and challenges of upgrading and repairing Apple computers.

Macs more-or-less fit in the same category as laptops as far as repair is concerned - they take a lot of effort to get into, the components are mostly custom-made by Apple, and unless the drive or RAM is at fault you're better off getting a new one. Having said that - as with most machines - usually the drive is the first thing to go, and that is easily replaceable.

Whether or not you really need a Mac is a topic of some contentiousness, and I've expressed my own thoughts here. But also it pays to check that the issue isn't software-related first. In my own experience, Macs don't necessarily fail any less than PCs, that depends on the PC and how well it was built.

RAM upgrades and the like are easy to perform, and for a very old Mac, upgrading to a Solid State drive (SSD) can make all the difference in terms of your Mac's longevity and overall performance. Nowadays it's easier to get old Macs to run newer versions of the Mac operating system, due to a tool called 'Opencore'. Which means if you really want to keep your old Mac ticking over, a solid state drive upgrade is generally all you need to run a more recent operating system.
